I My Cake & Ate It Too!

As you may know, last week was my 36th birthday and I couldn't be more grateful! This year has been huge for me with starting a business and having my second baby. It's had its challenges, but the rewards mean more than anything.

I was speaking with a mom who gets stressed about birthdays and holidays because of all the temptations she faces. She's been crash dieting for years and every time she tried the latest and greatest diet to lose the weight, she over-indulges when she attends an event with her family then all of her hard work is gone and she gives up until the next best thing.

The common thing I see when we over-indulge is that you're starving and not in the way you may think.

We're told that if we want to see results, we need to take the all or nothing approach. We're told that we have to workout until we barf and that we have to eat 100% clean because that's the lifestyle we must live for health. We're told that we need portion control and exercise at least an hour every single day.

I believe in nutrition and exercise, don't get me wrong, but you have to be realistic with yourself and do your best. If you can only commit to 20 minutes of exercise a couple days a week, then start with that. If you can't afford to eat strictly organic (cause this time of year, that stuff is especially expensive!!!) then get the conventional counterparts. What matters is that you are doing something that it working for you and that you can EASILY sustain. As for treats, have them too!! I try and follow the 80-20 rule. I don't just reserve treats for special events--nope! I'll have a cookie cause it's Tuesday.

Periodically having treats can actually save you in the long run. Having a treat can prevent binging at those special family events or when you're feeling stressed. It's ok to find pleasure in food and if you like cupcakes, enjoy a cupcake if you haven't had one in a while.

Too many times women feel like they have to sacrifice eating the things they love because they are afraid of losing control, but when you deny yourself of the pleasurable foods, you can be doing more harm than good.

So, when I'm asked what diet a mom should follow, I say the one that will work for you. If you're a raw vegan, I'm not going to tell you to go paleo.

Love your baby body,

Terrell
