3 Simple Steps To Loving Your Baby Body

I’m now a year postpartum with my second child and being a mom to a little girl has given me more strength to appreciate my body more than ever. You see, loving your postpartum body isn’t easy for many women. Theses changes can be very traumatic to a new mom.

I literally hated my body the minute my son was born almost 5 years ago. I was induced and retained a lot of fluid so I was looking little puffy after his birth. The sad thing was that I hated my body so much, that I was embarrassed to post the hospital pictures. I thought I was too fat and was ashamed.

I had expected to walk out of the hospital in my pre-baby jeans and I my plan was to look flawless--yeah, didn’t happen. My clothes didn’t fit and I left in my P.J’s. At least it was 10 pm.

Fast forward to my 6-week clearance, I healed well and was ready to get back to the gym. Looking back, I was looking for my lost self. I once had a ton of energy, had a job that I loved, and friends that I adored. After my son was born, I didn’t have any of that and I wanted something that was me. I wanted to be me again. I wanted my body that I worked so hard to achieve back. What I failed to understand was that my body was never going to be the same.

Loving your baby body comes from the inside. You can do what you want to the outside, but you will find that love when you learn to reconnect or for some, connect with your body and your mind. Your mind-body connection is what will set you free from your negative self. Look at it this way, when your mind isn’t communicating to your body, your body won’t do what you’re asking of it. You can do every diet in the world and every exercise program you find on social media but you will never look at yourself with kind eyes. You will always see the flaws and not the beauty.

This isn’t isn’t something that will happen overnight. This took me years to figure out on my own. his was something that I had to do for myself. I won’t happen if you're doing it for someone else. The truth is that hating my body was holding me back from enjoying some of lifes best moments. In fact, the way I felt about my body was robbing me of something far more important and I will never get those times back.

The first step is finding support and encouragement. This has to come from a positive place. You can find online communities, working with a group of women who are looking for the same thing, or even work with a mentor (I wish I had all of this on my journey!)

Finding something that works for you is a close second. This is tricky because you may stumble a lot before finding something that you can sustain without stress. You may try one thing and it may not work or you may try several things before you find something that you can happily live with. What works for someone else may not work for you and that doesn’t mean that you’re a failure, it just means that it doesn’t work for you, that’s it!

The most important tip I can give is to start looking at things you actually like about yourself. It doesn’t have to be body parts, it can be the work that you do, your honesty, your fighting spirit, or your drive for success. Whatever it is, it’s time to find love and reconnect with the most important person in the world, you.
